The other day my neighbors came over for a backyard visit and they brought along their adult son, who was visiting them from out of town. He’s a physical therapist, who loves his work, and I did know that his mother had sent him two of my books, Yoga for Times of Change and Yoga for Healthy Aging. We had a lot of fun chatting about this and that—making lots of jokes—until just as he was leaving, he said to me, “By the way, I really love your books! I mean it, I just love them. And I teach my patients things from your books all the time—they don’t even know it’s yoga, but the practices definitely help them.”

That was such a wonderful thing for me to hear! Because that is exactly why I wrote the book Yoga for Times of Change—to help other people.

When my editor at Shambhala approached me in 2019 about doing another book for them after the success of Yoga for Healthy Aging, I realized that I had over 20 years’ worth of knowledge and expertise about topics like stress, anxiety, depression, anger, and cultivating equanimity that I had never shared in a book before. And it seemed like a really good idea to get all that information down in one place so more people out there could benefit from the yogic practices and yoga philosophy that I myself had found so invaluable in my own life.

So I rose to the challenge. And Yoga for Times of Change was published on this day exactly one year ago! (If you have never seen the book and would like to learn more about it, go here.)

What’s Next?

Even though the book has been available for a year, I think there are still many people out there who don’t know about it yet—people who I think could really benefit from the simple practices that it describes. And because wanting to spread the word about how yoga can help with stress, anxiety, depression, anger, and cultivating equanimity is the reason I became a yoga teacher so many years ago, I’ve decided to spend more time this year continuing to do that. Yes, I’m still on a mission to bring peace of mind to as many people as possible. And I’d love your help!

I’m sure that there are many of you, like me, who are also passionate about sharing the benefits of yoga more broadly. So here are some ways we could collaborate, either online or—if you are in the San Francisco Area—in person:

  • I can speak to your book club about the book.
  • I can lead a Q&A session on the book or a selected topic from the book for your community or yoga teacher training.
  • I can be a guest on your podcast or write a guest post for your blog.

And, if you’re interested in sharing the practices in the book with your community, Barrie Risman, a long-time yoga teacher who helped me create the sequences for Yoga for Times of Change and created an on-demand class series based on them, would be delighted to lead an online or in-person workshop or training. These would include asana practice as well as background content, and she would teach many more options for the asana practices than I was able to cover in the book! I’ve agreed to appear as a guest in those as well, so participants can ask me questions directly. I’m very pleased about this because she’s both a wonderful teacher and an ardent supporter of my work.
