A Brief Overview of Yoga for Times of Change

Written during the pandemic, this book describes how yoga can help you adapt to and accept change, including changes in your personal life as well as changes in your community or even world-wide changes. It offers a wide range of both ancient and modern techniques that allow you to return yourself to balance when you’re experiencing emotional, physical, and mental challenges, and to fortify yourself for the future.

The practices are simple and down to earth, suitable for all ages and body types, and include simple yoga poses and sequences, breath practices, relaxation practices, and meditations. The book also provides many yoga techniques you can use to make peace with change through accepting your ever-changing self and the ever-changing world in which you live.

Topics include • the nature of change • basic yogic techniques for coping with change • stress • anxiety • mild depression • anger • grief • ways to practice yoga when you’re experiencing physical changes • using breath practices and meditation to be present with whatever is happening • making peace with change and taking skillful action

Rodney Yee, yoga teacher and co-author of Moving Toward Balance and Yoga: The Poetry of the Body

Yoga for Times of Change is definitely coming out at a timely moment. More than ever, we need tools and practices to help us cope with stress, anxiety, grief, and life’s transitions. Whether it’s calming down before I’m about to lose my patience with my teenage son, managing a to-do list that always seems to number in the hundreds, or getting myself back to sleep when I’m up in the middle of the night with anxious thoughts, I know firsthand the power of yoga to be a constant, reliable support during times of change and challenge. As a woman, a mother, a partner, as well as a student and teacher of yoga and meditation, I’m delighted to see that this accessible and well-documented book of yoga and meditations written by a compassionate and well-versed teacher is now available to all.

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, Canadian yoga teacher, public speaker, and advocate for gender equality and mental health

Yoga for Times of Change is a wonderfully heartfelt and authentic book offering a rich collection of techniques to help us navigate the ups and downs of this thing called LIFE. Whether you are looking for ways to cope with stress, anger, anxiety, or depression, this book contains a wealth of profound yogic tools for transformation. Best of all, they are presented in a way that makes them easily accessible even for those without any previous yoga experience.

Change is often overwhelming and completely unavoidable, so we all need the guidance of a good map to help us find our way. In Yoga for Times of Change, Nina Zolotow shows us how to apply yoga’s ancient teachings to our modern and often chaotic lives. Weaving together strands of yoga—the philosophy and practice along with real world examples—she provides a map that is not only beautiful, but that is also tremendously useful.

Change is inevitable. Yoga for Times of Change skillfully delivers the tools to help create the equanimity and awareness that will support us in riding the ebbs and flows of life. Keep this one close.

Tracee Stanley, author of Radiant Rest and Empowered Life Self-Inquiry Oracle Deck

Written in the soothing voice of a calm, strong and compassionate yoga teacher, Nina Zolotow draws wisdom from ancient yoga texts, knowledge from Western psychology and neuroscience, and understanding from her own journey through disturbed mind toward balance. Yoga for Times of Change is a wise and honest book that offers us profound insight and safe practice. It’s a treasured addition to my library!

Amy Weintraub, author of Yoga for Depression and Yoga for Your Mood Card Deck

What a thoughtful, informed, compassionate, and helpful book this is! Both wide-ranging and finely tuned at the same time, the guidance Nina Zolotow gives readers here is based on her continuing physical and contemplative yoga practice, empathy, and illuminating insight. She brings to her work elucidating perspectives from contemporary psychologists, psychiatrists, yoga teachers, spiritual teachers, therapists, writers, poets, bloggers and, importantly, her own personal experience and yogic self-inquiry. I am also impressed by the way she integrates, supports, and illumines these perspectives through frequent and effective reference to and quotations from important texts in the history of yoga philosophy from the traditions primarily of Vedānta, Classical Yoga, Nondual Shaiva Tantra, and Buddhism. In an accessible, personal, intelligent, honest, informed, and encouraging manner, she gives readers authentic, deeply yogic ways to move through difficult yet inevitable times of change in their lives.

William K. Mahony, PhD, Professor of Religious Studies, Davidson College

Yoga for Times of Change is packed with excellent recommendations and accessible choices of yoga postures, tools and techniques to help readers face challenging times. Nina’s sensible suggestions reinforce the need for each of us to choose carefully what to practice and when to practice based on personal lifestyles and energy levels. This book is a well-written breath of fresh air for anyone seeking self-care during times of change.

Beth Gibbs, Author of Enlighten Up! Finding Clarity, Contentment and Resilience in a Complicated World

Yoga for Times of Change is not so much for yogis seeking enlightenment as it is for those of us looking to carry life’s burden’s more lightly. It’s full of practical, adaptable, real-world solutions. Highly recommended!
